Northern Lights Motorhome

With the Northern Lights making a rare appearance in the UK overnight, we thought we'd share the best places to see them in your motorhome

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, can be seen in many places around the world, but the best places to see them in a motorhome would be in Northern Europe, particularly in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. These countries are located within the "Aurora Zone" and offer some of the best opportunities to witness this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Here are some specific locations within these countries that are known for their Northern Lights displays:

  • Norway: Tromsø, Lofoten Islands, and North Cape
  • Sweden: Abisko National Park
  • Finland: Lapland and Rovaniemi
  • Iceland: Reykjavik, Vik, and Akureyri

The best time to see the Northern Lights is during the winter months when the nights are long and dark. The peak season for Northern Lights viewing is typically from late September to early April. However, the weather and solar activity can be unpredictable, so it's best to check the forecast before planning your trip.

It's also important to note that motorhome travel during the winter months can be challenging, especially in areas with heavy snowfall and icy roads. Make sure your motorhome is equipped for winter conditions, and plan your routes carefully to avoid any potential hazards. Additionally, it's a good idea to have a backup plan in case the weather conditions are not favourable for viewing the Northern Lights.

For longer trips around Europe make sure you equip your van with a specialist motorhome SatNav, we stock the market leading brand Avtex Tourer 3.  Check it out before you chase the Northern lights!
